What IS this…this thing?
Is it…a hat?
(Hmmm. Remind me to tell Ian he would make a good Flying Nun for Halloween next year.)
But no, no I think it is not a hat.
Is it…a kitteh-blanket?
It certainly would do the trick. What do you think, T?
I’ll take that as a no.
Well, then. What in the world could it be?
Wait a minute. Maybe if I just move this part here…
…and unfold this bit there…
…and do a little ironing…
…and find some squee-worthy buttons…
Oh! It’s a Baby Surprise Jacket! You know, for a baby!
Now now, not to make anyone jump to conclusions, as much as I would like this a little bit down the road, this is not MY baby, or soon to be baby person, but will still be a part of my fambly. Ian’s brother and his lovely lady are having a little wee one, and natch, this means I get to be awesome auntie and create my first-ever knitted item for a tiny tot! Hooray!
Try to resist the buttons. No, go ahead, try. I DARE YOU.
It’s so garsh darn freakin’ ca-yooooooooot that I don’t know quite what to do with myself. The pattern is called the Baby Surprise Jacket not because it will be a surprise for the baby (although, for rilz, you know that kid would be surprised by just about anything at that age), but because it looks like a blob of knitted schmutz until you fold it up and then, Surprise! Jacket!!!
It’s so crazy to think that a little person will fit in this thing, and even with room to spare at first. It’s like making doll-clothing! And it knit up so fast, I wonder why I haven’t been making these for years??? I don’t have to wonder about something else, though.
Even though I am and remain baby-free at the moment, dudes: I want to keep it.
